I have struggled to identify my Ganoderma species and posted it again and again various sites. I would like to know if you would accept a photo of this one and help me with it. It is growing on pig nut hickory and Southern Red Oak. I have a mass of mycelium running up the center of a fallen oak tree with multiples of Ganoderma going up the base of the upturned tree. I was of the thinking I could use the mycelium and innoculate with a shitake spore we purchased but held back to see what would emerge here with the natural fungus. I am in Western Kentucky. You'll need to ask someone who know the fungi of your region or get yourself some good fungi identification books. Most fungi that grow on trees are easier to identify than species that grow on the ground.

True Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) grows throughout the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere but it is not necessarily common everywhere. It grows on many hardwood species. In my area it is not common. I have only come across it a few times and in every case it was growing on either American beech (Fagus grandifolia) or sugar maple (Acer saccharum). I have no idea how common it might be in your region or on what species of trees that it prefers to grow. However, most Ganoderma species have similar properties so you would be best to work with whatever Ganoderma species is most plentiful in your area.Michael Vertollihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06138085112202375433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012089007308287311.post-66941876388260422642015-09-28T17:31:24.201-04:002015-09-28T17:31:24.201-04:00Hi Michael, I live in France and see lots of these...Hi Michael, I live in France and see lots of these and bright orangy yellow ones which are young and slightly softer - They are all hard to break off the trees - I would like to know are they all medicinal and with regard to the orangy yellow ones could they be Reishi? I read that Reishi are only found in Asia on dead plum trees if this is so then I would like to know what the ones here are that I keep finding in the woods and can French dead plum trees in Europe produce Reishi? thanks.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03601168899184879269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012089007308287311.post-36718811704825025372014-02-20T04:52:50.360-05:002014-02-20T04:52:50.360-05:00Keep up the good work God blessKeep up the good work God blessBillyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05255529063946337354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012089007308287311.post-86853036833285978962013-12-17T11:12:05.709-05:002013-12-17T11:12:05.709-05:00Hi Billy,

As a result, some of the spores when they are released are attracted to the top of the fungus." Thanks for sharing, Michael, I am really enjoying your writing.
